WOOD RECLAMATION
In the webster's dictionary reclamation stands for 'recover' restore' and 'to make usable again'. For us at Millwood it stands
for : 'rig-r-up' pull-r-over' and denail. Oh, don't get us wrong, if it was an option for these old buildings to remain standing, we'd be all for it. We love the history they tell .. but when they are deserted and in ill repair, or when a barn starts sagging more and more each year, or when progress demands the land be used differently .. when a building needs to come down, it's better off reclaimed than demolished and taken to the dump. |

Before the reclamation process can begin, the building needs to be 'safety checked': all debris moved out, waterlines and electricity undone, windows removed, surroundings cleared off. After taking off the roof and siding, Mike will weaken the structure and prepare it to be pulled over. Understandably, as the buildings become unstable, the highest level of safety is observed. Once down, the building will be taken apart piece by piece. Oftentimes the timber is of the best quality old growth wood that withstood the test of time. And then, these beautifully aged beams and boards, gracefully carrying the character and scars of their time of service, are in our hands to admire and prepare for a whole new life. |
To the right, you see the Camino (California) Lumber Mill, reclaimed in 1999. |

Wood Sales Millwood's lumberyard contains an unusual blend of beams and boards all stacked up by size, species and source. The wood is sold sometimes 'as is' and sometimes cleaned and treated. The price is calculated per boardfoot. One boardfoot is a 12" x 12" piece of wood, 1 inch thick. So a 2" x 6" board of 1 foot long, is also 1 boardfoot. Therefor, the bigger the beam, the more boardfootage per linear foot .. are you with me still ? This high quality aged wood is a unique product and the price is higher than store bought new wood. It is not always readily available. Our inventory depends on the reclamation projects that come our way. Mike is a good networker and can sometimes find what you need even if it is not already in our lumberyard. Call us with any questions.
